The Viking Parent Group AKA “VPG” is excited for another year serving our school together! (“VPG” is the BCS junior and senior high version of PTA or PTF.) We are a group of BCS Parents who desire to be bridge builders, offering support to our school in various capacities. VPG’s guiding vision and goal is through Service to Staff & Students, we build Connections with each other...and the bonus gift is we automatically and organically grow our BCS Community Culture.
As our students grow older and more independent, a parent’s role changes but it is no less important. At the elementary level, many of us volunteered in the classrooms, chaperoned field trips, etc. As our students approach the junior and senior high levels, parents often discover a necessary adjustment of our expectations. Because we grow and change in different ways alongside our students, it can be challenging to remember that we’re not alone. Being a part of service opportunities often inadvertently assists in the process of making these changes as we build new relationships through shoulder to shoulder collaboration.
VPG strives to provide service opportunities that are reasonable, sustainable and adjustable so that parents can find a way to still be involved in their student’s school in ways that fit each contributor’s time and talents. Many parents work outside the home, or consider going back to work outside the home. Many parents volunteer in churches or community organizations, and our time is limited for varieties of unique reasons. We strive make volunteering for VPG a customizable experience for our diverse parental community.
In addition to service, once a month our meeting becomes a “Fireside Chat”, with guest appearances from the principal and various faculty members, allowing us a great opportunity to hear firsthand how the school operates and what’s coming next. (If you haven’t experienced this already, you may find at some point that you receive a limited or incomplete array of information from your student, so these Fireside Chats are so helpful!)
Finally, parent involvement at various levels is a crucial part of the ability to provide the full range of BCS benefits for our students, perhaps now more than ever, as our teachers and administration are stretched in navigating new and frequently changing waters. All these factors continue to build BCS’s relational community, which is one of the vital aspects of the traditional BCS experience.
Are you a BCS parent? You’re in! We want you to know that if you’ve never been to VPG before, if you want to come, but are only able to attend once in awhile, or if you’re committed to join us full time, YOU ARE WELCOME HERE! We strive to create a casual environment and a safe space for all to come and go as needed!
