Exploring Creation: Discovering God’s Artistry at the Botanical Garden

Recently, our first-graders had the opportunity to enjoy a field trip to the Bellevue Botanical Garden. There is a specific kind of magic in the way a six year old looks at the outdoors, and our goal was to help grow that curiosity. For these children from our Mack Elementary campus, the world became a living classroom, turning the pages of their science textbooks into something they could touch, smell, and deeply admire.

We often talk about the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, but watching these children interact with the outdoors reminds you of how special creation really is. As they moved through the garden paths, our goal was to help them understand that every petal and every branch is a deliberate brushstroke from a Creator who loves them.

The Classroom Without Walls

In the weeks leading up to this trip, our first grade classrooms were filled with talk of ecosystems and the delicate balance of life. However, we want our studies to be more than just reading pages and memorizing facts. We want your children to have hands-on learning experiences where they can get outside and understand how complex creation is. We do this because we believe that admiring God’s creation is a form of worship.

When your child kneels in the dirt to observe a bug or points out the specific shape of a plant they recognized from a diagram, the learning becomes personal. It is in these moments that the boundary between school and worship begins to fade. We want your children to see that studying biology is a way of honoring the One who designed life itself.

Mentorship in the Wild

The trip was also a beautiful display of how relationships form the heart of our community. Teachers and parent volunteers walked alongside the students as supervisors  and as co-discoverers. There is a special bond that can form when a teacher kneels down in the grass to help a child focus a magnifying glass.

These interactions reflect our commitment to an education where every child is known and loved. When a teacher shares in the excitement of your child exploring nature, they are modeling a lifelong curiosity and a humble heart. Our faculty at the elementary school view these outings as opportunities to sharpen the spirits of your children, reminding them that they belong to a community that values their questions as much as their answers.

Cultivating a Heart for Discipleship

At Bellevue Christian School, we see education as a form of spiritual formation. We are teaching your children how to identify and care for plants, so they can be prepared for a life of stewardship. By understanding how an ecosystem functions, your child begins to see their role in the Kingdom of God. They learn that we are called to care for what has been entrusted to us, from the smallest garden plot to the relationships we build with one another.

This sense of calling starts early. Even in the first grade, we are connecting their growing skills to a larger purpose. When we talk about protecting the environment, we talk about it in the context of loving our neighbors and honoring God’s handiwork. It is a lesson in humility, recognizing that while we can plant and water, it is God who gives it life.

A Legacy of Faith and Learning

As your children boarded the bus to return to our campus, we hope that they brought home many stories and returned with a deeper appreciation for the world around them. This journey to the Bellevue Botanical Garden is just one chapter in the larger story God is writing at our school.

We invite you to learn more about us and the way we integrate faith into every lesson. If you are looking for a place where your child can grow in both wisdom and stature, we encourage you to explore our admissions process. Together, we are fostering a generation that looks at the world and sees the glory of God reflected in every living thing.
