BELLEVUE CHRISTIAN DESIGN STUDENTS TAKE FIRST PLACE IN MAKE:ABLE CHALLENGE
Student-designed playing cards prototype best in iterative design
Sept. 20, 2022 – BELLEVUE, Wash. – Bellevue Christian School's "Team Noah" won first place last month in the 2022 make:able challenge for "best showcase of iterative design." Members in Team Noah were in the Engineering Design class during the 2021-22 school year, taught by Jim Cairns.
Team Noah -- BCS students Katherine Young, Graham Foster, Jiho Son, Maggie Stepanian and Meredith Wetter -- helped Noah Hardin, a six-year-old with Freedman Sheldon’s Syndrome, by designing a 3D-printed device that allows him to play cards without putting stress on his hands. The team's video submission shows their design process and prototype testing.
This year, 350 teams submitted entries across 15 countries, separated into three ages groups (Under 14, 14-18 and 18+). Bellevue Christian had three groups nominated as finalists in the 14-18 age group for best showcase of iterative design, with one group also being nominated as finalists in best use of 3D printing and most inspirational story. A total of five finalist groups went in front of a panel of industry experts. As winners, Team Noah will receive a filamentive filament education bundle.
The make:able design challenge is an annual assistive technology design challenge. The program is developed around an online challenge toolkit, which takes students through a step-by-step process to design and make an assistive device that improves the day-to-day life of someone with a disability or the elderly.
