Counting it up

"I can count and I understand math words such as more and less"

Early math skills are developing in our classrooms.  There are many activities that support children learning to count objects and developing an understanding of math words and concepts such as more and less.  In our classrooms you might see children with clipboards, taking a survey to find out who likes or does not like something.  The survey taker will ask each of the children a question and record the answers on a survey sheet marked YES or NO.  After they have asked everyone, they count up the marks and see which column has more and which has less.

Tally marks can also be used to keep track of how many pennies it takes to sink a plastic lid in water.  Simple, fun, playful paths that capture the young child's attention and nurture those early math skills.
