Scholarships

Contributions to the BCS Endowment Fund have provided for a number of scholarships in perpetuity. These annual tuition scholarships are funded with earned income from the preceding year. The criteria are outlined below, and please contact Ruth Aeschliman (425-454-4402 ext. 208) in the BCS Development Department with any questions.

CRITERIA FOR DEWEY FREDERICKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($1,500)
(2008 Dewey Fredericks Memorial Scholarship Application)

  1. BCS student entering 9th grade (may be renewed annually through high school)
  2. Financial need
  3. Commitment to Jesus Christ and an openness to sharing that faith with others
  4. A recommendation from the applicant's English teacher

Dewey Fredricks, long-time BCS teacher, administrator, coach and board member, passed away in July 1997. His family and friends set up a memorial fund, for tuition assistance, to perpetuate Dewey’s passion and commitment to young people. A scholarship will be given to a student in each high school class to help offset yearly tuition. In the case of present 9th-11th graders, the scholarships may be renewable annually for their high school years at BCS. There will be one or two scholarships available to an incoming 9th grader. On his application for a teaching position at BCS in 1957 Dewey wrote: “My deepest desire is to teach Christian young people to speak out for Jesus Christ.” The applicant should be serious about academic studies, but need not have top grades. Dewey, a Bible and English teacher, had a heart for students who struggled, but worked hard to learn, especially in English classes.

CRITERIA FOR JONI HANNA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)
(2008 Joni Hanna Memorial Scholarship Application)

  1. Current or incoming SAS student
  2. Student and parents are committed to the educational therapy program
  3. Student and parents have a commitment to Christian education and the knowledge of Jesus Christ
  4. Financial need (special consideration given but not limited to single parents or those families with more than one student in the educational therapy program).

Joni Hanna, former Director of Student Academic Services, tirelessly advocated for students with special needs. Her ministry to the students, parents and faculty of Bellevue Christian School imparted both the school’s vision statement of preparing students to transform their world as well as the recognition of each one’s significance in the body of Christ. Joni often quoted I Corinthians 12:12-26 to express her desire that our SAS students know that they are whole in the Lord and to recognize that life and the body of Christ is not complete without them. Joni’s steadfast faith and calm assurance that lives can be transformed is a legacy for future generations. It is in this spirit that Joni’s family and colleagues have joined together to provide a memorial fund for tuition assistance.

CRITERIA FOR SCOTT BIOREN MEMORIAL SCHOLARHSIP ($1,500)
(2008 Scott Bioren Memorial Scholarship Application)

  1. Financial Need
  2. Christian testimony
  3. Committed to BCS for school career, as evidenced by a history of attendance
  4. Athlete, any grade level in high school
  5. Solid academics

Scott Bioren, ’88, attended BCS from 2nd grade. He felt a strong attachment to the BCS community while as a student, and as an alumnus. He was grateful for the opportunity to be educated at BCS and to benefit from, and to contribute to, the community which makes up this school. He had a particular fondness for the BCS soccer program both as a player (elected captain and MVP) and later as a coach leading BCS to two state championships. Scott lost his life August 16, 1995, while piloting a routine commercial air cargo flight, as a result of an uncontrollable fire in the right engine of the aircraft. This scholarship is made possible by the gracious contributions of many people who knew Scott and were moved by his untimely death.

CRITERIA FOR LLOYD ADLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)
(2008 Lloyd Adler Memorial Scholarship Application)

  1. BCS high school student
  2. Financial need
  3. Christian character and commitment as exhibited in service to the school and larger community
  4. As a possible tie-breaker, but not essential, an interest in biology or sciences

The Lloyd D. Adler Scholarship was established in 1992 by Mr. Adler’s widow and son. Mr. Adler was the father of BCS alumnus Bruce Adler, Class of 1961, and grandfather of BCS alumnae Laurie Adler, Class of 1989. Mr. Adler was a high school biology teacher and college basketball coach before turning to a career in business. As founder, president, and chairman of the board of the Wigwam Department Stores, he was able to supply BCS with a variety of donated goods in the early days of the school. He maintained an interest in supporting BCS students who needed tuition assistance and demonstrated Christian character and commitment, as exhibited in service to the school and larger community.

CRITERIA FOR MICHAEL BRENNAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (A $1,500 annual non-endowed scholarship)
(2008 Michael Brennan Memorial Scholarship Application)

  1. BCS high school student
  2. Committed to living fully for God
  3. Active in music or the arts
  4. Financial need
  5. Special consideration for single-parent families

At age 46, on August 29, 1999, Michael Brennan went home to be with the Lord. He was known for often exclaiming, “There is nothing like the presence of God!” His love and inspiration for praise and worship surely helped to bring God’s presence into a room. A talented musician who used his giftedness in church worship, Michael also worked as a geologist, photographer, and graphic artist and enjoyed a successful career in insurance sales and management. He was passionate about God’s creation as celebrated in music and the arts. Michael was a wonderful husband, father, and friend and it is in his memory that his family makes this scholarship possible for a BCS student to pursue their passion for Christ and their giftedness in music and/or the arts.
