Home Dirs

You are capable of FULL access to your home directory files from home or anywhere in the world, including copying, deleting, updating and changing files like you normally do on your own computer.

The new process requires that you have at least one of the following requirements met with the computer that you are using.

  • Windows XP installed (any version)
  • Windows 2000 installed (any version)
  • Windows NT 4.0 installed (any version) with at least Internet Explorer 5 with web folders
  • Windows 98/95 installed (any version) with at least Internet Explorer 5 with web folders

If you are not sure whether your Windows NT, 98 or 95 has web folders then you can try to follow the instructions along with everyone else and see if you can get it to work. You can also download the newest Internet Explorer and make sure that the web folders component of it is selected for installation.

Home Directory Setup:

  1. First thing that you will need to do is to double-click onto Network Neighborhood on your Desktop or Network Places depending on what your system calls it.
  2. Next, there is an icon in the folder that opens called Add Network Place, double-click on it to start the wizard.
  3. You will be asked to enter the path of the network place to add, use one of the following lines of text from the table below depending on where your home directory is and paste it into the wizard.

Here is an example of what it should look like after you paste it:

(Some of the text gets cut off in the picture because the line wasn't long enough to fit it all)

  4. After you copy in the path, click Next, you will be prompted to enter your username, password and domain. Type "bcs" without the quotes for the domain.
  5. After a short while, you will be prompted to input a name for your network place. This can be any name you like that will remind you of what it is. You may choose whatever name you wish for it but usually the default is fine.
  6. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
  7. Once completed, it will attempt to open the network place for you. It will then ask you for your username, password and the domain name "bcs" once again. Type them in to login.
  8. Once logged in... you will see all folders that you have permission to. This may be one folder or many folders depending on whom you share files with, etc. Find the folder that has your username on it and go into it. Your documents will be under the My Documents folder.
  9. You may paste, copy, delete, make folders, rename files or anything else you desire now that you are logged in. You may move files from your computer and paste them into this folder or you may copy files from the folder to your computer. You may also open files directly from the network place and edit them in Word or Excel or any program like you normally do and then save normally. The network place makes sure that the server gets your updated copy when you save it. Be careful when opening very large files! If you try to open a 30 megabyte powerpoint file you will be waiting a LONG time for it to download unless you have DSL or Cable modem. 56k users should stick to small word files and such. To log out, simply close the window you are using.
  10. To reach the network place again, simply open Network Neighborhood or My Network Places once again and double-click on the name you gave to the network place earlier. You will then be asked to login and then you can use it again.
