Drama
Spring 2008 JH Drama Production - Trouble in Tumbleweed
Singers
Prerequisite: Desire to sing
Singers is a preparatory singing class and a prerequisite for Concert Choir. Ninth graders/beginning singers start in this ensemble. Emphasis is on basic singing/choral technique and skill development, sight singing/solfege, ear training, rhythm and introduction to basic choral literature. May be taken one or two semesters each year. Students who plan to audition for Concert Choir should take a minimum of two semesters. Several performances are scheduled throughout the year, including a District Choral Festival in the spring.
Outside of class workload: 3-4 required concerts, study sheets for written exams, and occasional housing of guest choirs opportunity.
Chanson
Prerequisite: Singers and audition, grade 10 and above.
Chanson is a women’s vocal ensemble singing representative literature from all musical genres. Sight-singing, ear-training and vocal technique are part of the daily rehearsal in addition to the preparation of treble choral literature. Women interested in singing are encouraged to audition for this ensemble, which provides the opportunity to explore the unique repertoire of music written for female/treble voices.
Fee: Chanson Dress $60 - $80
Outside of class workload: 3-4 required concerts, study sheets for written exams, and occasional housing of guest choirs opportunity.
Concert Choir
HS Choir Homecoming Concert - March 31, 2008 @ 7:30PM
Prerequisite: BCS Singers or Chanson, annual audition
Concert Choir, taken as a year long course, is the premier large choral ensemble, open to 10th, 11th and 12th graders by audition only. Audition requirements include sight singing skill, voice quality and pitch accuracy. Concert Choir performs and studies choral literature from all musical periods and genre. In addition to the 4 required concerts each year, this ensemble makes an annual tour.
Fees: Annual $15.00 robe fee; $60.00 Choir Retreat (September); Choir Tour Approximately $450.00
Outside of class workload: Required concerts, written and sung examinations and occasional housing of guest choirs (usually 2-4 times per year).
Kantorei
Kantorei Concert - June 9, 2008 @ 7:30PM
Prerequisite: Concert Choir and audition
Kantorei is a 16-18 member mixed vocal ensemble - a select group auditioned from Concert Choir. Members bring a high level of motivation and commitment. There are many concert opportunities throughout the school year including 3-4 performances of the Advent Madrigal Dinners during the first part of Christmas Vacation each December. Musical styles vary from Renaissance motets through contemporary Gospel, with emphasis on quality choral literature reflecting the BCHS mission to unfold all of Creation to the glory of God—soli Deo gloria. Kantorei members are also expected to sing in Concert Choir. In addition, The Madrigal Feast production the first four days of Christmas vacation (usually Saturday through Tuesday of the first week of vacation) is a major commitment, including rehearsals and local concerts leading up to production week.

Concert Band
Concert Band/7th Grade Band Concert - June 12, 2008 @ 7:30PM
Prerequisite: Intermediate Band, or at least three years of experience in a school band program. All new students must audition with instructor before registering for this course.
The Concert Band has four evening performances per year. In addition the Concert Band will perform at elementary and Junior High Chapels during the school day. We will attend two festivals during the course of the year. Attendance at all performances and festivals is required. Music is comprised of traditional marches, overtures, transcriptions, arrangements of movie music, and sacred music arrangements. Membership is open to students who would like to experience the reality of God in music, express their love to Him through music, improve their instrumental skills, and who will strive for excellence on a daily basis.
Fees: Band uniform, band folder, instrument accessories, rental fee for school-owned instruments
Homework: 30 minute daily practice, one project per quarter
Pep Band
Prerequisite: Concert band or symphonic wind ensemble membership.
Pep Band is open to any concert band or symphonic wind ensemble member who is not involved in cheerleading or varsity basketball. Practices are after school three days a week beginning in November. The Pep Band performs at 10 home varsity basketball games. Once the band begins to perform at games, after school practices will occur no more than once a week. 80% attendance at rehearsals and games is required to earn .5 credits for Pep Band season. If either varsity team makes it to the district playoffs (middle of February -- ten days) the Pep Band will travel and perform at those games.
Jazz Ensemble
Jazz Concert - June 10, 2008 @ 7:30PM
Prerequisite: Audition with instructor, membership in an additional BCS performing ensemble.
The Jazz Ensemble is comprised of Concert Band or Symphonic Wind Ensemble members who wish to expand and improve their musical experience through the jazz idiom. This ensemble consists of alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitar, bass, piano and percussion. The Jazz Ensemble meets three days per week before school. Performances include: The Puyallup Fair (Private Schools Day), fall, winter, and spring concerts, outside concerts, and a final concert. All performances are required. One credit per semester may be earned for Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Ensemble tours with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Homework: One project per semester.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble
SWE Concert - June 10, 2008 @ 7:30PM
Prerequisite: Audition with instructor
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a performance-oriented group. The group will perform at least ten times per year including four evening performances at school, one annual Tour, at least two festivals, and several performances in the local community. Membership is by audition only and is open to students who are serious about working hard and perfecting music so that it might be used as a vehicle to share the Lord with people outside of the BCS community. Members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble are highly encouraged to study privately on their instrument.
Fee: Uniform, rental fee for school-owned instruments, annual retreat, tour expenses. The retreat costs approximately $40-50. The Tour costs range from $200 - $600 depending on the destination and length of the tour. Every even year the Wind Ensemble will tour during Spring Break. Every odd year the Wind Ensemble will tour for four days over the second or third weekend in March. All performances, retreats, and tours are required.
Homework: 45 minutes daily practice at least 5 days per week; one project per semester.
Music Theory (offered periodically)
This is an upper level (grades 10-12) music class for students pursuing music as an area of emphasis. There will be specific training in harmony, music fundamentals, sight-reading, ear training, music perception, and the keyboard. Serves as both a general music prep class for college level theory or a basic class for students with no theory background.
