What are you reading?

This is the first of a series of book reviews that we plan to provideas time goes on. People who are interested in Christian school education should de interested in the alternative consciousness which is foundational to that kind of schooling. It's hard to find much help on this topic even from Christian radio, TV, and magazines, but there are good books available. Hence this review.

Thomas Howard, Hallowed Be This House, was originally published under the title, Spendor in the Ordinary, by Tyndale House. Alta Vista College republished it under the new title.

As an illustration of how closely the Lord is involved in our day-to-day life, this book is hard to surpass. It brings to life the idea, repeatedly made clear in the Bible, that the Lord has made and that He upholds the creation with the specific purpose of revealing Himself to us. God loves the world He created. In Genesis one He repeatedly said that it was good. He loves us, His human creatures that He created, and He made the world as a channel for two-way contact with Himself. In Jesus' prayer in John 17, He says that life eternal consists in knowing God and Jesus Christ, whom He sent. Once we come to know God though Jesus as He is revealed in the Bible, the whole creation opens up as a stairway to heaven for touch with the God who reveals Himself therein.

Lest this be unfamiliar, think of Psalm 19:"The heavens are telling of the glory of God…" and Psalm 8:"O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is thy name in all the earth..." Romans 1:20 says "…since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." (emphasis added). IN Job 42:5-6, after God had talked to Job for what we call four chapters, in which He discussed nothing but the creation, Job says: "I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees Thee: Therefore I react, and I repent in dust and ashes." It is a tremendous loss to the modern western church, dazzled by the remarkable discoveries of modern science, to fail to see God’s nearness in the creation.

Thomas sees the home as the place where children are meant to learn the meaning of love. Beginning at the front door, he goes through the room by room, reminding us of what the Lord is saying to us in each place. It all corroborates that first great commandment: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37 NASB). So he discusses the front door, the house walls, the entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, even the bathroom, and the bedroom.

If you are looking for a fresh touch with the Lord, this may be a good place to begin.
